It is the same every year. The first week of September sneaks up on me. The city transforms as students descend on campuses across the region, government workers return from summer vacations and most of festival season is behind us. The energy at the station changes almost overnight.
What a wonderful summer! Young Canada Works partially funded two full time staff—Alexandra Grinfeld and Gabrielle Poulin. Alex, our festivals co-ordinator, partnered with festivals large and small from mainstream staples like Bluesfest, Jazzfest and City Folk to independent arts festivals like Asinabka film festival, Latin Sparks, and Ottawa Explosion Weekend. We had tables at the Hot Air Balloon Festival and are presenting acts during Marvest.
Gabrielle focussed on our cultural and third language programming and connecting with contributors we don’t get to interact with as much. Gabrielle came in on weekends and after hours to provide support, training, and get feedback from many voices.
We hired one of our volunteer contributors to take charge of our annual CHUO card program. Dan MacDiarmid has done a stellar job building relationships with over 50 businesses so we are set to launch the new card in November!
Our summer work-study team included Kate Thornley whose energy and enthusiasm has seeped in to every new training and “Locals Only” show she has produced. In fact, Kate has invited many new contributors to cut their teeth on that show with her.
Lena Nitguna, our campus relations coordinator, set up a framework and strategy to make sure we keep a strong connection to our founding community on campus.
And introducing Heidi Farhim, our new webmaster. Kudos and thanks to outgoing webmaster Youssef El-Khalil who worked tirelessly to get some big back end things in order for us. Heidi has already helped update and automate our play sheets. We have a bunch of great projects in the works with her including posting our play sheets online for you and podcasting every show!
And the team that has been together for a few seasons now—Mickey, Omar, Emmanuel and I. We’re going strong as we launch a new season of programming, hire new work-study staff, welcome new contributors, offer trainings and workshops and push forward on all kinds of projects.
We have big plans in the works and we want you to be part of it. Listen on the FM or online and very soon, subscribe to our podcasts.
