While many people find inspiration through music, one Ottawa piano teacher is bringing his personal touch to the table.
Mubarak Farah recently launched Ability Through Music, a music school focused on people of all ages with disabilities. Farah is blind, and strives to use his school to overcome many of the barriers to music education faced by students and teachers alike.
“My goal is to empower as many people with disabilities as possible through these lessons,” Farah said.
Blind from a young age, music appealed to Farah immediately.
“I began listening to the Somali folk music my parents were into,” said Farah. “I began playing the piano and trying to mimic what I’d been hearing, and I haven’t looked back since.”
While the school only offers piano lessons for now, Farah is planning to expand to other instruments, song writing, bands, and even performance down the line.
